Czech in 74 Days

As I’m writing this, it’s Sunday 12th January 2025. On Wednesday 26th March, less than three months away (74 days, to be exact), I will be jetting off to Prague in the Czech Republic for a few days. Currently, I don’t speak a word of Czech; my knowledge of the language extends to the Czech loanword ‘robot’ in English.

As a rule of thumb, when I’m travelling I like to learn a little bit of the local language, rather than arrive and immediately expect everybody there to speak English to me. Obviously, it’s neither possible nor feasible to be fluent in the language of every country I visit, but I like to show my respect for the place and for the people who live there by learning the basics.

With this in mind, today I’m embarking on my Czech learning journey. By the time my trip comes around in March, I hope to have learned enough to be able to get by in Prague and to have simple conversations. For now, I’m going to start off with Czech lessons on Duolingo, and I’ll be documenting my progress here on the blog! Wish me luck!
