Learning Czech: Back on Track for Week 3

How things can change in a week! In last week’s post, I mentioned that I was finding it hard to find the time for my Duolingo Czech lessons. Now, I’m happy to report that the tides have turned, and this week has been much more positive, although with increasingly difficult lessons.

One area where I’ve noticed improvement is pronunciation. I’m finally able to read whole sentences with (more or less) correct pronunciation, including the new letters. Obviously I’ve got a horrific accent, but hopefully I’ve reached a place where I can just about be understood.

On a more negative note, I was starting to get the hang of the gender system early in the week, but then Duolingo introduced plurals in more detail, which has been … interesting. Plurals turned everything I thought I knew about gender in Czech on its head, and it will take some time before I wrap my head around the system.

As I’m writing this, I’m about to start a new Duolingo unit about food and drink, which will definitely come in handy during my trip to Prague. Check back next Sunday for the next update on my learning journey!
