Interested in teaching English? CELTA is the course for you
Teaching English as a foreign language is a really popular career at the moment. Why, you ask? The answer is simple: with English as a lingua franca, people all over the world want to learn it. And how do they learn it? One way is through English classes, which are taught by English teachers. There you have it!
For some English teaching jobs, the only requirement is being a native (or in some cases non-native but fluent) speaker. Easy-peasy, or so you’d think. For other jobs, a specific English teaching qualification is required. With a huge number of English teaching courses available, it can be hard to know which one to choose.
One option - which I highly recommend - is CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). CELTA is accredited by Cambridge, and according to the official website, is “the most widely recognised English teaching qualification in the world and the most often requested by employers”.
The course (available both in person and online) is suitable for those with both no or some teaching experience, and features a combination of theoretical and practical elements. It also accepts students who speak English as a second language, which is crucial for breaking the stigma of “native accents”. Another great thing about CELTA is its worldwide availability: you can take a CELTA course in 130 countries! If you want to find your nearest CELTA centre, click here.
You might be wondering why I chose to write about CELTA here out of all the other English teaching qualifications. The reason is simple: I did a CELTA course in the summer of 2024, and I loved it! In six weeks, thanks to the strong focus on teaching practice, I transformed from a nervous beginner to a confident and capable teacher.
So, if you want to teach English, take a look at the CELTA website and see if it’s for you!
